F.A.Q
1. What languages are used at school?
With the exception of foreign language courses (English, Slovenian, Spanish and German) and the Slovenian program, all courses are taught in French. The language of communication between students and teachers is French. The language of communication between students can be French or Slovenian.
With parents, the school communicates in French, Slovenian and English, depending on the family’s choice. School information messages are systematically in all three languages.
2. My child doesn't speak French. Can he/she go to a French school?
Of course. The French schools in the AEFE network have many years’ experience in this area, and have developed techniques and learning situations to suit.
From the age of 2, your child will be able to learn French with the other kindergarten pupils, following a curriculum adapted to his or her age. Slovenian-speaking support staff will be on hand to help your child adapt. If necessary, he or she can benefit from reinforced French classes.
If your child enters elementary school and can already read, he or she will follow the French curriculum, but a specialized teacher may be able to reinforce his or her learning of the French language.
If your child is a non-reader, this support will be further reinforced, so that together – school, pupil, family – we can meet the challenge of a new language at a pivotal age.
3. Why learn French?
Today, the French-speaking world counts 220 million speakers on five continents, and it is estimated that there will be 700 million in 30 years’ time. Even if, like English, French is not always the mother tongue, it occupies a privileged place as a language of education, administration, diplomacy, justice, the army, the media, commerce and business in a large number of countries.
French is one of the official languages of many international organizations.
Last but not least, learning a language means coming into contact with another culture and immersing oneself in its values. This philosophy guides the daily life of the French school.
4. What's the difference between learning French and learning in French?
At a French school, your child will follow the same curriculum as if he or she were attending school in France. This teaching is given in French, with an adapted pedagogy. In this way, your child will acquire mastery of the French language through daily learning and classroom activities.
5. What if we speak a third language at home?
Children from families where a third language is spoken are generally very comfortable in our multilingual school. This is undoubtedly because they have learned to master a language other than the school language at an early age, and are able to associate each language with different environments.
6. What languages are taught at school?
All teaching is in French, except for foreign language classes. All children learn Slovenian and English from kindergarten onwards. In junior high, the school offers English, German and Spanish.
7. Are all students at the school French?
The school welcomes students of over 15 different nationalities. Over a third are Slovenian, around a third are French or bi-national, and a quarter come from other nationalities. We are delighted to welcome students from French-speaking countries such as Belgium, and from countries as diverse as Hungary, the Netherlands, Turkey, Greece, the Czech Republic and Austria….
